Angus Fraser

Cricket After Dinner Speaker

Angus Robert Charles Fraser was born in 1965 in Wigan and is a retired English cricketer. Known as Gus (or sometimes Gnat) he played for Middlesex between the years of 1984 and 2002, and is thought of by his fans as one of the best players of his generation. He also played for the national team (both in Test matches and one day internationals) and is one of the most respected men to have ever played for England. A passionate cricketer, he was known for his patriotic and hard working approach. Throughout his career he used a bat which was affectionately known as the 'Gussy Hitter'. He is currently the managing director of cricket at Middlesex County Cricket Club.

Playing Career
Angus was educated at Gayton High School in Middlesex and is thought of as one of the most controlled and consistent bowlers of the 1990s. Although he was born in Lancashire he chose to represent Middlesex. A right handed and accurate bowler, who stands at 6 foot 6 inches tall, he joined Middlesex in 1984. This was the start of his long and illustrious sporting career (both at county and international level) which included many highlights and achievements worthy of note.

Perhaps one of his finest hours was during the 1993-1994 tour of the West Indies when he was instrumental in setting up the famous victory in the Barbados Test match. This was the West Indies first defeat at Bridgetown for more than fifty years.

His score of thirty eight not out in a one day international against Australia during the 1990-1991 tour was almost enough to bring England back from the brink of defeat. However, in the end Australia won by the narrowest of margins - three runs!

At county level Angus played for Middlesex until 2002 serving as their captain during his last year with the team.

In 1996 he was the Wisden ( the cricketer's reference book or 'Bible of Cricket'!) 'Cricketer of the Year'.

Retirement From Cricket
On his retirement from the game Angus turned to the world of media and journalism and became cricket correspondent for the Independent Newspaper. He continued with this post until 2009 when he he left to become the managing director of cricket at Middlesex. He has also worked, on numerous occasions, as a summariser for 'Test Match Special' on BBC radio. Having been under the spotlight for a number of years himself he enjoyed his work in journalism - now he was able to do the analysing!

Angus is available for after dinner speaking all over the United Kingdom. He has much experience on the circuit and his open and relaxed approach will endear himself to any audience.
